Secret to Success

Writer's picture: elbyelby

Success is often painted in the colours of innate intelligence, great health, or the glitter of popularity. However, my journey has taught me that the actual palette of success is composed of much deeper, more resilient hues: passion and perseverance, or, simply put, grit.

Misconception of Success

In a culture that values rapid victories and obvious accomplishments, it's tempting to believe that individuals who reach the summit of their professions possess some unique qualities. We observe people who achieve in academics, business, or sports and think they have high IQs, good health, or widespread popularity. While these elements can increase one's possibilities, they are not the foundation for long-term success.

My life has not been a linear narrative of achievements based on gifted intelligence or social charm. Growing up in challenging circumstances, where resources were scarce, and the future looked uncertain, I learned early on that the conventional success metrics would not be my measures.

Power of Grit

Grit is a persistent motor fuelled by passion and determination that propels us towards our goals against all circumstances. Sometimes, the boundaries are tight, and the failures are too crushing. In those moments, the impulse to give up may be decisive. However, it is here that the spirit of grit is most evident—the decision to take one more step, to give it another attempt.

This concept became my guiding star during the darkest times. Whether overcoming the high physical and emotional demands of an Ironman triathlon or managing the unexpected waves of economic downturns in my consulting job, the idea of grit held. I didn't simply survive; I refocused my efforts, learnt from each setback, and carried on with even more tenacity.

Recalibrating with Grit

I've come to understand that success isn't a destination but a continuous journey. It requires periodic recalibration—a concept I've embraced wholeheartedly. Every so often, I step back to assess my path. Am I being driven by passion or merely coasting on past momentum? Is my perseverance aligned with my core values and long-term vision? These questions help me adjust my sails, ensuring that my efforts are not just about moving forward but moving in the right direction.

One vivid example was during a particularly strenuous phase of my life when both professional and personal arenas seemed to be upheaval. I remembered the lessons from my athletic training: just as I had paced myself through the miles of swimming, biking, and running, I needed to pace my life. I redefined my goals to understand that actual growth often comes from discomfort and disruption.

Grit to Continue

Maintaining grit doesn't mean you never falter or doubt. There are days when the hurdles we need to jump appear too high. In those moments, the temptation to give up is all too strong. Yet, it's here that the essence of grit truly shines; give it one more try. Think about that powerful narrative: You fall nine times and get up ten times. You will always win with that mindset.

I'm not claiming a unique or extraordinary strength in sharing my story. Instead, I am acknowledging a universal truth that applies to us all. Grit is accessible to anyone, regardless of IQ, health, or popularity. It's a choice, a habit, a practice. It's the decision to look beyond immediate setbacks and focus on the longer horizon.

Your Grit, Secret to Success

One thing you can take away from this contemplation is that your current circumstances or intrinsic characteristics do not decide your chances of success. They are moulded by your determination to endure, remain enthusiastic about what is most important to you, and overcome every obstacle.

Grit has guided me through both hard and good times. It's a road map open to everyone who wants to utilise it. So, when you confront your obstacles, remember that the basis of success is something you create, one gritty step at a time. Thats your secret to success. Go for it!
